    Match summary

Patrick van Aanholt's free-kick gave Crystal Palace a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka produced two fine saves in the first 16 minutes, denying headed efforts from Gary Cahill and Scott Dann.

Van Aanholt broke the deadlock a minute before half-time, finding the top-left corner from 25 yards.

Jordan Ayew hit a post three minutes after the break while Fabian Schar forced Vicente Guaita into action at the other end.

Newcastle's hopes of a late equaliser were hit when Valentino Lazaro was shown a red card for denying Wilfried Zaha a goalscoring opportunity in stoppage time.

Palace's first win since Boxing Day sends them above Newcastle into 13th on 33 points.

Newcastle drop to 14th, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
