Manager Bio

Gary O’Neil has managed AFC Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

As a player, O'Neil made 214 Premier League appearances in midfield across spells with Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham United and Norwich City.

He scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists in the competition.

O’Neil’s first job in coaching came in August 2010 as the assistant manager of Liverpool’s Under-23s.

Six months later, he joined AFC Bournemouth’s senior staff under head coach Jonathan Woodgate, who had been a team-mate at Middlesbrough and then Scott Parker, who he played alongside at West Ham.

O’Neil was part of the staff that oversaw the Cherries promotion from the Championship in 2021/22.

With three defeats from their first four Premier League matches, culminating in a 9-0 loss to Liverpool, O’Neil took the reins as interim head coach at the end of August 2022.

He immediately led his side on a six-match unbeaten run, earning a nomination for September’s Barclays Manager of the Month award.

On 27 November 2022 he was named the permanent head coach on an 18-month contract, with the option of a further year.

The decision to appoint him as head coach proved to be an excellent one, as O'Neil guided the Cherries to Premier League safety, finishing 2022/23 in 15th spot.

But O'Neil was sacked by Bournemouth in June 2023, before taking up the role at Molineux ahead of the 2023/24 season.

O'Neil's first season in charge of Wolves ended with a 14th-placed finish and included wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

But a run of 11 losses in 16 matches in 2024/25 meant Wolves parted company with O'Neil on 15 December 2024 with the club sat second-from-bottom, with only nine points.
