Manager Bio

Mike Phelan's Premier League managerial career started shortly before the 2016/17 campaign as temporary manager of Hull City.

The Lancashire-born coach started his playing career with Burnley, before moving to Norwich City, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion.

After retiring in 1995, Phelan returned to Carrow Road as assistant manager to Gary Megson, while he also managed Norwich's reserve team.

Phelan then followed Megson to Blackpool and Stockport County before he began a long coaching spell at Manchester United in 1999.

Starting with a role in the Centre of Excellence, Phelan was promoted to first-team coach in 2001 before stepping up to assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson in September 2008.

The former midfielder left Old Trafford following Ferguson's retirement in 2013 collecting three Premier League titles as the Scot's assistant.

In November 2014, Phelan returned for a third spell at Norwich to take up a role as first-team coach, but he shortly left the club in January 2015 before being named as Hull City assistant manager in February that year.

Following promotion to the Premier League, Steve Bruce departed the Tigers in the summer and Phelan took temporary charge.

Phelan was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award for August after two wins out of three, including a 2-1 victory over defending champions Leicester City on the opening day.
