Burnley extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but may rue their failure to hold onto their lead against Gary O'Neil's side.

Vincent Kompany's side made a fast start to the contest and took a deserved lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen in the 37th minute, but in-form Rayan Ait-Nouri headed in an equaliser for Wolves.

Burnley had chances to win it in the second half, but Jose Sa's strong performance in the Wolves goal leaves the Clarets six points from safety on a night when Nottingham Forest got a valuable win and Everton picked up a point.

Burnley made a bright start, although they were unable to notably trouble Sa and almost went behind against the run of play when Joao Gomes sent a powerful header wide.

The momentum swung back in the Clarets’ favour as the first half progressed, and they capitalised as Bruun Larsen met Dara O’Shea’s cross with a sweetly hit low volley that nestled into the bottom-right corner eight minutes before the break.

But Burnley were punished for some slack defending on the stroke of half-time – Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick was met by an unmarked Ait-Nouri, who guided his header past Arijanet Muric to net his third goal in four games across all competitions for Wolves.

Ait-Nouri had the chance to double his tally in the 53rd minute when he was one-on-one with Muric, but the goalkeeper made a fine save to keep his side in it.

Burnley pressed as the match reached the latter stages but Wolves weathered the pressure well, with Sa making two vital saves to deny Bruun Larsen and Wilson Odobert as the hosts pushed to regain their lead.

Odobert had another chance to grab a winner, but his dipping shot was well held by the Wolves 'keeper, while Mario Lemina skimmed the outside of the post with a diving header at the other end.

There was then more late drama as Jay Rodriguez poked a shot against the woodwork and turned in the rebound, but the Burnley striker was denied by the offside flag. 

While Burnley missed the opportunity to win consecutive home games for the first time this season, their home form could still prove pivotal going into the last seven matches of the campaign.

Wolves remain in 10th, with 42 points.
