Wigan, the North champions, twice took the lead against the South winners at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium.
But, Zion Atta’s late goal ensured that Crystal Palace edged a five-goal thriller.
The competition was introduced by the Premier League to provide young players with experience of evening matches under floodlights in varied weather conditions.
