Sunderland overcame a man deficit for much of the match to stop Burnley going top of Group B with a 1-1 draw at Eppleton Colliery.
George Brady was sent off for denying Burnley a goal-scoring opportunity after only 19 minutes.
Things got worse for Sunderland when Jimmy Dunn put Burnley ahead just before half-time.
But the Black Cats' search for an equaliser eventually paid off when George Honeyman, pictured above, struck late.
The result put Sunderland top with five points from three matches, a point ahead of Blackburn Rovers and Burnley. Cardiff City have two points.
