Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters has paid tribute to West Ham United joint-chairman David Gold, who has sadly passed away at the age of 86.
Gold was chairman of Birmingham City when they got promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2002, before he took over West Ham with David Sullivan in 2010.
"David has been around the Premier League Shareholders’ table for more than 20 years, with both West Ham United and Birmingham City, and leaves a great legacy and a host of good friends," Masters said.
"David’s contribution to the game goes beyond the progress he oversaw at West Ham, and includes a big impact throughout football and the Premier League itself.
"My thoughts are with his family and friends, and with all at West Ham. He will be truly missed."
West Ham have announced that their players as well as those of Leeds United will wear black armbands when the two teams meet at Elland Road tonight.
