What they said

“I remember in training we were doing a small-sided game and couldn’t start because Cech wanted the balls out of his net. I asked why. He said it was because he hated any football in his goal. This is a mentality that only the best have.” - John Terry

"I am honoured to have been the manager that, at such an early age, gave Petr a top Premier League No 1 shirt. After that day, it is all about him. All about his numbers, his performances, his clean sheets, his titles and his professionalism." - Jose Mourinho

The stats that show Cech's greatness

Cech's 24 clean sheets in 35 Premier League matches in his debut Premier League season of 2004/05 is still a record for a goalkeeper in a single season in the competition.

He conceded a Premier League goal on average once every 108 minutes, the best ratio of any goalkeeper to play 200+ times in the competition.

Cech has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in Premier League history (202).

His 162 clean sheets in the Premier League for Chelsea are the most any goalkeeper has ever done so for a single club in the competition.

Cech kept more clean sheets (eight) and conceded fewer goals (two) in his first 10 Premier League appearances than any other goalkeeper.

He registered his 50th Premier League clean sheet in only his 82nd match, fewer than any goalkeeper.

Cech’s 100th Premier League clean sheet was in his 180th appearance, 18 matches fewer than any other goalkeeper has reached that landmark.

He also registered more clean sheets (59) and conceded fewer goals (50) than any other goalkeeper in their first 100 Premier League appearances.

Cech holds the record for the best minutes-per-goal conceded in a season in which a goalkeeper has played a minimum of 500 minutes (2014/15, one goal conceded every 303 minutes) and minimum 1,000 minutes (2004/05, one goal conceded every 242 minutes)

In the 2004/05 Premier League season, Cech let in only 13 goals in 35 appearances and 3,150 minutes played – there’s been 554 instances of a goalkeeper playing 2,000 minutes in a season, and that’s the fewest goals a goalkeeper has ever conceded.

Cech kept 13 clean sheets against Newcastle United in the Premier League. Only Mark Schwarzer has ever kept more against a side among goalkeepers (14 v Liverpool).

Since 2003/04, when Opta has the data on record, the two best save percentages for a goalkeeper with 10+ matches in a Premier League season are Petr Cech in 2006/07 (86 per cent) and Petr Cech in 2004/05 (83 per cent). Indeed, minimum five matches has Cech in 2014/15 (89 per cent) level with Tomasz Kuszczak in 2006/07 (89 per cent).
