As Premier League clubs found out their fixtures for the 2023/24 season, they would have hoped to have avoided facing Mohamed Salah first up on the opening weekend.
Liverpool's first opponents will be Chelsea, who they travel to on Sunday 13 August.

Salah has eight goals in total in the first round of fixtures, a record that he shares with Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney.
The big question is will the Egyptian move out in front and become the first player to score nine or more goals against a Chelsea side has netted four times against before.
Most Matchweek 1 goals
Player | Goals |
Alan Shearer | 8 |
---|---|
Frank Lampard | 8 |
Wayne Rooney | 8 |
Mohamed Salah | 8 |
Jamie Vardy | 7 |
Teddy Sheringham | 7 |
Sergio Aguero | 7 |
Louis Saha | 6 |
Didier Drogba | 6 |
Salah's first Matchweek 1 goal came on his Premier League debut for Liverpool, when he netted against Watford in August 2017.
He followed that up with strikes against West Ham United in 2018 and Norwich City in 2019, before getting a hat-trick against Leeds United in 2020.
Another goal against Norwich came in 2021, before he struck an 80th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Fulham at the start of last season.
