He has made 13 appearances for Dortmund this season but has started only twice.
He joined the German club in 2019 from New York City FC, and has scored 13 goals in 90 matches for Dortmund.
The 21-year-old made his international debut for United States aged 17. He has played 24 times for his country, scoring seven goals.
He is the son of Claudio and Danielle Reyna, who played for the United States' men's and women's teams respectively. Claudio made 105 Premier League appearances during his playing career, representing Sunderland and Manchester City, scoring seven times.
Gio will hope to follow in his father's footsteps and make his Premier League debut on Sunday when Forest travel to AFC Bournemouth. He will wear the No 20 shirt for Forest.
