Darwin Nunez made Premier League HISTORY in Liverpool's 4-1 win over Chelsea, becoming the first player EVER to hit the woodwork as many as four times in a match.
Since such data started to be recorded in 2003/04, there had been only four occasions of a player hitting the crossbar or post THREE times in a match.
Most woodwork hits in a match*
Player | Match | Season | Hits |
Darwin Nunez | Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea | 2023/24 | 4 |
---|---|---|---|
Timo Werner | Southampton 0-6 Chelsea | 2021/22 | 3 |
Jay Jay Okocha | Spurs 0-1 Bolton | 2003/04 | 3 |
Cristiano Ronaldo | Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle | 2006/07 | 3 |
Leandro Trossard | Brighton 2-3 Man Utd | 2020/21 | 3 |
*Since 2003/04
Nunez took 11 shots without scoring on Wednesday, becoming just the second Liverpool player on record to have that many attempts and not score, emulating Luis Suarez against Norwich City in October 2011.
Just five of Nunez's shots were on target, while two directly hit the woodwork and two were pushed onto it, as he racked up an Expected Goals (xG) total of 1.45.
Remarkably, Nunez has now hit the post or crossbar NINE times this season, three times the total of ANYONE else.

Nunez's woodwork hits go some way to explaining Liverpool leading all clubs in this metric in 2023/24, four more than Everton and five more than Tottenham Hotspur.
