Ronald Koeman is excited by the ambition of Everton after being appointed their manager on a three-year contract.

The Dutchman arrives after two seasons with Southampton, whom he led to seventh place in 2014/15 and sixth last season, setting club-record league positions and points hauls in the process.

"I am very excited to be Everton manager," Koeman told evertonfc.com: "I believe in the club, in the team, in the fans and in our ability to achieve things in the future.

"Everton is a club with a great history and real ambition and it is a proud feeling for me to be part of what we want to go and do, together with the Chairman [Bill Kenwright] and Farhad Moshiri [the club's largest shareholder]."

Koeman replaces Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park after the Spaniard was relieved of his duties shortly before Everton finished 2015/16 in 11th.

The 53-year-old, who as a player who won the European Cup with Barcelona and the UEFA European Championship with the Netherlands, has been named Premier League manager of the month three times and was a successful coach at Ajax and Feyenoord.

"We are really pleased to have secured our No 1 target from the moment we set out to appoint a new manager," Kenwright said. "Ronald has such a strong track record in the game, instantly commanding respect for what he achieved as a player and for his qualities and accomplishments as a manager."

Koeman has won 47% of his Premier League matches, the best win ratio of a Southampton manager in the competition.

After his departure, Southampton released a statement on saintsfc.co.uk.

"The search has already begun for the right appointment who can take the club to the next level and build on our track record of recent success, which culminated in a sixth-place finish in last season's Premier League, as well as qualification for the group stages of the Europa League," the club said.

"Our focus now is to build on our long-term plan, and work with a new management team who share both the club's and our supporters' values and ambitions."
