2004: Carvalho follows Mourinho to Chelsea
Ricardo Carvalho followed his former manager to Chelsea when he left Porto for Jose Mourinho’s side on a three-year contract.
The Portuguese had won the UEFA Champions League the previous season with Mourinho and defender Paulo Ferreira, who also joined him at Stamford Bridge.
Carvalho forged a superb centre-back partnership with John Terry and helped the Blues win their first Premier League title, and the League Cup, in his first season in west London.
The Portuguese followed up with a second title the following season and claimed a third in his sixth and final season at the club in 2009/10.
Carvalho made 135 PL appearances for Chelsea, scoring seven goals, before following Mourinho again, this time to Real Madrid.
2005: Vassell leaves Villa for Man City
After eight years at Aston Villa, striker Darius Vassell joined Manchester City.
The England international arrived at the same time as Andrew Cole and scored eight league goals in 36 appearances alongside the former Manchester United forward, his most productive season at City.
Vassell scored his 50th Premier League goal in a 2-1 victory in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in February 2008.
He scored 17 goals in four seasons at the club before leaving in 2009.
