Manchester City cruised to an emphatic 5-2 victory over Charlton Athletic, condemning the hosts to their fifth successive league defeat.

Andrew Cole put Manchester City ahead after 25 minutes and, although Darren Bent equalised with a volley against the run of play, the visitors regained their lead a minute later through Trevor Sinclair.

Joey Barton’s strike gave City daylight before Jay Bothroyd pulled a goal back, and late efforts from Darius Vassell and Cole wrapped up the three points.

The result left City in eighth on 24 points, three points outside the top four, while Charlton dropped down to 12th on 19 points.
