Brighton sink Newcastle to ease relegation fears

Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a vital three points in the battle to avoid relegation, beating Newcastle United 3-0 at Amex Stadium.

Defender Jakub Moder looked lively on his first league start, testing Martin Dubravka and sending two more shots wide in the opening five minutes.

Shortly after Isaac Hayden had left the field on a stretcher, following an accidental collision with Yves Bissouma, Brighton made their dominance count with a goal in first-half stoppage time.

Leandro Trossard controlled Joel Veltman's long pass and arrowed a shot into the bottom-right corner.

Ryan Fraser's effort cannoned off a Brighton post shortly after the break but, in the ensuing counter-attack, Danny Welbeck doubled the hosts' lead.

The striker cut in from the left before finding the net in a similar fashion to Trossard for his third league goal of the season.

Neal Maupay made it 3-0 midway through the half when he met Pascal Gross's cross with a first-time volley as Brighton recorded their first league double over Newcastle since 1978/79.

The result keeps the Seagulls 16th with 32 points from 29 matches, six more than 18th-placed Fulham and four more than Newcastle.

Steve Bruce's side lie 17th with 28 points from 29 matches, but have a match in hand over Fulham.
