Michael Appleton has taken temporary charge of two matches in the Premier League - most recently with Leicester City.
The former Manchester United youth player had loan spells at Wimbledon, Lincoln City and Grimsby Town before making a permanent move to Preston North End. After making over a century of appearances at Preston, the midfielder had a spell with West Bromwich Albion, but had to retire due to injury in November 2003.
Appleton stayed with the Baggies in a coaching capacity, before moving into a first-team coaching role and the Salford-born coach was named caretaker manager at The Hawthorns for a 3-3 draw against West Ham United in February 2011.
When Roy Hodgson was given the permanent job, Appleton remained at West Brom as assistant manager until he was given his first official managerial role with Portsmouth in November 2011.
Portsmouth fell into administration and were relegated from the Championship at the end of the season with Appleton joining Blackpool in November of the next campaign. Appleton's managerial stay at Blackpool was short as he joined Blackburn Rovers for an equally short reign.
On 4 July 2014, Oxford United announced Appleton as their new head coach, where he would spend three successful seasons. Oxford achieved automatic promotion from League Two in their second season with Appleton, while they also reached the final of the EFL Trophy.
In 2016/17, Oxford were beaten in the EFL Trophy final for a second consecutive season and finished in eighth place in League One.
Leicester announced Michael Appleton as their assistant manager in the summer of 2017 following the permanent managerial appointment of Craig Shakespeare at King Power Stadium. Shakespeare and Leicester parted company in October of the same year, leaving Appleton to take charge of the Foxes' 2-1 Premier League victory at Swansea City, before he reverted back to assistant manager under Claude Puel.
