Manager Bio

Claude Puel has managed two teams in the Premier League, Southampton and Leicester City.

Previously he managed for one complete season in the Premier League, with Southampton in 2016/17.

Puel spent his entire professional playing career at Monaco, amassing over 450 appearances, including a seven-year spell under Arsene Wenger.

As a player, he won Ligue 1 on two occasions and lifted other silverware such as the Coupe de France and Trophee des champions.

A one-club man, the Frenchman spent time managing Monaco’s reserve team before being handed the top job in 1999.

A year later he led the side to the Ligue 1 title and success in the Trophee des champions.

After reaching the final of the Coupe de la Ligue in 2001, Puel departed Monaco at the end of his contract - ending a 24-year association with the club.

A second management role followed at Lille, where he spent six seasons and helped nurture a host of young talent, including Eden Hazard.

In 2008, Puel took on the top job at Lyon, and he guided them to a first ever UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance in 2009/10.

The Frenchman left the Stade de Gerland in the summer of 2011, subsequently signing a deal to take charge of Nice.

He led the French club to two fourth-place finishes during his time there before leaving at the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

On 30 June 2016, Puel was announced as Ronald Koeman's successor at St Mary's Stadium.

Under the Frenchman's guidance, Southampton reached the final of the EFL Cup, losing to Manchester United.

Saints ended the 2016/17 Premier League season in eighth position, but Southampton announced the termination of Puel's contract prior to pre-season.

Puel swiftly returned to the Premier League in October 2017 as Craig Shakespeare’s successor at Leicester.

The Foxes ended the 2017/18 season in ninth, but in February 2019 the club announced the departure of Puel.
