Liverpool held off a spirited Chelsea fightback to earn a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
Antonio Conte’s men had come from behind to claim points in two matches already this season, but Dejan Lovren’s volley and a stunning Jordan Henderson strike meant Diego Costa’s goal was too little, too late for the hosts.
Lovren put Liverpool in front on 17 minutes when he volleyed into the far left corner of Thibaut Courtois’ goal after a deep cross from Philippe Coutinho.
And captain Henderson added a second with a sublime effort from long distance, curling into the top corner and leaving Courtois with no chance.
Chelsea, who handed David Luiz a first appearance since returning to the club, pulled one back when Costa struck from close range on 61 minutes.
But the Blues could not find a leveller, ending their unbeaten start to the campaign and Conte’s 21-match winning streak in home league matches as a manager.
