Newcastle United ended a five-match losing streak at home with a goalless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Brighton also stopped their own run of four away defeats. They started brightly, with Anthony Knockaert's effort saved by Karl Darlow.
In the second half Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan adjusted brilliantly to keep out Isaac Hayden's deflected shot before palming out Dwight Gayle's header.
The draw between last season's top two in the Championship leaves Newcastle in 16th, one point above the bottom three. Brighton remain 12th.
