Pierre Fonkeu scored the only goal a Norwich City missed out on a place in the Division 2 play-offs, despite a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The Canaries had to win and rely on other results to go their way in order to finish in the top five, but Fonkeu's 20th-minute winner was not enough to make a difference.
For Villa, who had already secured second place in the table, it was a second defeat in four days following a run of eight successive victories in all competitions.
They finished second, seven points behind champions Blackburn Rovers and will now host Reading in a one-legged play-off semi-final tie at Villa Park.
Norwich came seventh, missing the play-offs by two places and two points.
