Ivan Toney's first-half penalty secured Brentford's first home win since the opening day of the season as they beat Everton to move above them in the table.
Toney's second goal in as many matches arrived on 24 minutes following Andros Townsend's high challenge on Frank Onyeka. The spot-kick was awarded following a VAR review.
Everton briefly rallied after the goal with Salomon Rondon having an effort saved by Alvaro Fernandez.
Brentford edged the first half and were denied a second goal three minutes before the break when Jordan Pickford kept out Bryan Mbeumo's shot.
The visitors improved in the second half with Alex Iwobi forcing another couple of saves from Fernandez and Abdoulaye Doucoure flashing a shot wide, but they ultimately fell to a fifth defeat in seven matches.
Brentford move up to 12th with 16 points while Everton are a point worse off and drop to 14th.
