    MAN OF THE MATCH?

    Report

Manchester City scored three times in the second half to complete a 3-1 turnaround victory over Everton at Goodison Park and reduce the gap on league leaders Liverpool to five points with a match in hand.

Goals from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva lifted Man City into the top four as the champions returned to winning ways in the Premier League.

    How the match unfolded

In their first match since winning the FIFA Club World Cup, City started brightly and only the incredible reflexes of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who denied Alvarez and Matheus Nunes with a double save, prevented them taking the lead.

Instead, it was Everton who went in front against the run of play just before the half-hour.

After Rodri was uncharacteristically dispossessed, Beto played in Dwight McNeil and his low cross was finished from close range by Jack Harrison, against his former side.

Harrison almost had a second just a few minutes later, but his shot was well saved by Ederson.

Things went from bad to worse for City, as centre-back John Stones limped off to be replaced with Josko Gvardiol.

After struggling to create chances for a equaliser in the first half, City emerged for the second with renewed vigour and were back level on 53 minutes, when a brilliant low shot from distance by Foden flew into the bottom corner.

Eleven minutes later, the champions were awarded a penalty after Amadou Onana had blocked Nathan Ake’s shot with his arm. Julian Alvarez struck the spot-kick down the middle to put City ahead.

Silva then completed the scoring with four minutes left, as he pounced on a poor clearance from Pickford and curled the ball over him and into the far corner.

There was still time for Foden to hit a post with a stunning angled effort in stoppage time, as City moved fourth and onto 37 points.

Everton remain in 17th with 16 points, one point above Luton Town.
