Premier League Table

A reminder of where Liverpool sit in history

Liverpool have won the Premier League title for the second time, after 2019/20.

It is their 20th English top-flight title overall, moving them level with Manchester United for the joint-most by any side.

JUMPING FOR JOY - Gakpo and co. euphoric

Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge:

“There's more that they can achieve. They’ve got it now. They know they can do it. When a manager comes in and does it in his first season, it gives you that belief that you can keep replicating it. This is just the beginning for the manager and his players.”

Captain fantastic

Virgil van Dijk is the 12th different player to captain Liverpool to the top-flight title and the first non-British player to do so.

LET IT SINK IN - Reds are floored by the occasion

More from Ange Postecoglou:

“In the first half, what was really disappointing was the manner in which we conceded the goals. I thought we were actually well in the game and had our moments going forward. Once they went in front it was really difficult, with the crowd behind them, to get back into the game.

“We’ve obviously rested a few, which I think we needed. The lads who played have come through OK, which is what we needed. [Thursday is] a massive opportunity. We’ll put all our energies, efforts and focus into that and try to push on to a European final.”

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou:

“Credit to Liverpool. They’re worthy champions – they’ve been outstanding all year. It was really hard for us. They proved to be too good.

“We were going to face a highly motivated team and so it proved. We started the game OK and tried to make it as hard as possible. We’re making a lot of changes to our team on a weekly basis. It’s affecting our fluency and consistency, and we’re paying the price for that."

The Spurs view…

While Liverpool celebrated their title victory, Spurs suffered their 19th Premier League defeat of the season. It leaves them 16th in the table, and now their attention will turn to their UEFA Europa League semi-final with Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

Let’s see what their head coach, Ange Postecoglou, has said.

Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge, on Andy Robertson:

“Slowly but surely, he took the position on. He’s been a revelation in terms of what he brings to the team going forward. I remember him and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] arguing about who’s got the most assists and wanting to win that trophy. Leadership-wise, I know he's grown into that as well. He’s become a leader in the dressing room.”

Premier League pundit Steve McManaman:

“What was really nice about the celebrations, apart from the players, is seeing some of the kitmen, the medical staff, the physios. They’ve been here a long time, we know them personally. It’s really nice seeing them all included, they help the team, so when the team win, they all win, and they all share in the happiness.”

VIRG WANTS MORE - Liverpool defender conducts Anfield chorus

Premier League pundit Michael Owen:

“I don’t think any of us will get home tonight with the traffic and the people! This is a rare occasion where Liverpool fans and players will all be celebrating alike. The party will go on. Maybe even for four weeks! They’ve got plenty of time to do it now, they deserve it.”

More from Liverpool defender Andy Robertson:

“For me, when I came to this club, I’ve been here a long time, and you quickly realise how good Scottish players have been at this club. There’s a little bit of pressure with that but I took that on board. I don’t think Liverpool have ever won a trophy without a Scottish player in it.”

Premier League pundit Robbie Fowler:

“This is the conversation had with his boys. This is what you should be doing, this is what it’s all about. Now they’re doing it. They’ve won the league in front of their fans. Only six teams have won it this early, to do it here at Anfield is brilliant.”

THE SLOT MACHINE PAYS OUT - Dutchman wins it at the first attempt

Robertson in fine company

Andy Robertson becomes the third Scot to win the Premier League on multiple occasions, joining Darren Fletcher and Brian McClair.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson:

On the difference with the 2019/20 team: “It was a different style of play. High energy, high press. This team’s a bit more controlled. It’s two very different teams but from the manager’s point of view the key things are still the same - counter press, press high up, get the ball forward and get it to the dangerous players. The consistency has been there for both teams and that’s why we got over the line. It’s our consistency. Maybe a couple of slips but nothing mad, and that’s why you get to seal it so far ahead.”

More from Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister:

On his move to Liverpool: “I think it was the right decision for me. Not just because of my team, the club, the city, it’s something amazing. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. It was the right decision and I always thank Jurgen because he was a really important part.”

TAKING IT IN - TAA and Robertson enjoy second PL with fans

More from Alexis Mac Allister:

On his goal: “It was really good. I don’t think I’m gonna score that one again but I said the same against Fulham. After I scored a similar goal. It wasn’t bad!”

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister:

“Not bad, not bad! To win a World Cup and then a Premier League is something really special. It’s an achievement I really really enjoyed but it wouldn’t be possible without my team-mates. They are the most important thing for me and I’m just one part of the puzzle.

“They are really special. This team is really really good. Last year we showed it but it wasn’t enough. This time we made a big difference. Hopefully this way we can enjoy it.”

KEY MAN IN MIDFIELD - Gravenberch has played massive role this season

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch:

“Amazing, I’m so grateful. It was really amazing, from the start of the game we wanted to do it for [the fans] and we did it.

“I got a lot of the trust from the coach who put me in the [number 6] role. It’s really nice. When we arrived, it was just goosebumps, it was amazing with the fans. There were so many people.

“I’m really happy that the fans are here. I can’t wait for the next one.”

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson:

“The last time we won it was a strange time but we kind of got that feeling against Man Utd at home when it was pretty much done. Then the world paused and it was quite unique the way we did it. We enjoyed it but you can’t beat what we experienced today. The fans during the game, after the game. I’m glad we managed to experience that as well.”

Premier League pundit Michael Owen:

“The current players, of course it’s important to them, but they can’t do anything about what’s happened in the past, they can only affect what’s happening now. However, for the fans, and the club itself, it’s so important to go equal with [Man Utd] as the best teams in England.

“It makes Liverpool feel like they’re back on top.”

RESPECT FROM PEP - He congratulates Liverpool

Pep Guardiola congratulates Liverpool:

Man City manager Pep Guardiola took a moment during his press conference, following their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final, to congratulate the new title winners.

"Before we start, on behalf of myself and the club we want to congratulate Liverpool for their Premier League victory.

"Well deserved, no doubt about that, a fantastic team. Give me one year, like It happened the last four years and hopefully next season we can do better and compete until the end of the season.

"Liverpool, congratulations."

Premier League pundit Michael Owen:

“As soon as the minutes were up [Arne Slot] stood there and he looked around. His concentration broke for the first time ever. He waved, blew kisses to his family. He looked at the banners in the Kop. Got all his staff up with him, took it all in after 90 minutes. It was quite nice to see.”

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp:

“You’ve only got to go through history. Look at what happened after Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson left. Everyone has struggled. I thought it’d be the same here. I thought this guy might be under real pressure, but he wasn’t.”

A 20TH TITLE - Liverpool’s second in the Premier League era

Where Liverpool now sit in the top-flight titles list

20 - Liverpool and Man Utd
13 - Arsenal
10 - Man City
9 - Everton
7 - Aston Villa

Premier League pundit Steve McManaman:

“Regardless of anything, even when they went one down, Tottenham were the right type of team for Liverpool to play today. They knew they would get back and overpower them.

“It was in the air today, you knew they would stomp them. Curtis Jones was speechless! He’s never been speechless in his 21 years, I know his family very well, I’m thrilled to bits for them.”

Premier League pundit Robbie Fowler:

“Jurgen when he came, he had to change everyone’s mentality, Arne Slot comes in and the belief is in the players straight away. Getting in, getting the players to be their very best.”

EGYPTIAN KING - Salah at the heart of Liverpool’s success

More from Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo:

“I play in my natural position now. The way we play gets me into positions that I can take on a man or go inside or outside. [Last year] I played in so many different positions and didn’t really get the chance to adapt to one position. That was a difficult time for me but I learned a lot from that year.”

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo:

“The Dutch impact, I think you guys saw it for years. Virgil’s been here for a long time. This year, we’ve played like how we knew in Holland. It’s amazing to play like this, and the coach, tactically, brought it to another level. It’s a good start.

“In Holland, the Premier League is one of the biggest, if not the biggest league. To even have a chance to come close to winning it, and now winning it, is amazing.”

Liverpool forward Mo Salah:

On personal records he’d like to break: “Goal involvements for sure. Hopefully I’m going to break it soon. I know I broke the record for 38 games. Now one goal or one assist to go I think? I counted!”

CELEBRATION CIRCLE - Squad celebrate together first

Premier League pundit Michael Owen:

“I suppose you have to have a target, you come into a top team, a team that’s won in recent years. Great players in that dressing room. He set his stall out early on, he didn’t change too much, tweaks here and there. It’s been quite incredible, I think one of his biggest strengths is that he didn’t change too much, it was already a great team.

“Right from the start his eyes were on the prize.”

More from Liverpool forward Mo Salah:

“Incredible. At half-time I was a little bit frustrated because I had a chance in the first half. I wanted to win it at Anfield. We met last week and I didn’t want it to finish with Crystal Palace against Arsenal. To be able to score in this game and have a good result is incredible."

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo:

“Amazing! We worked really hard this year. Special moments. To get this is amazing.”

On Arne Slot’s impact: “People spoke about it often. I think it’s a slight chance of position and the way we play. He’s helped me a lot. I hope I can play many more better games than this one.”

A SECOND TITLE - Elliott adds a second PL trophy to his cabinet

Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge:

On Arne Slot: “He’s been exceptional. To come in after a big manager who’s been successful and adored and loved by the fanbase, he’s stamped his own style on it. The team became more of a defensive unit, counter-attacking-wise they were even more devastating. What the manager has done in such a short space of time is nothing short of remarkable.”

More from Liverpool forward Mo Salah:

On the difference Arne Slot’s made: “It’s quite tough to say one thing but the tactics are quite different. As long as you rest me defensively, I’ll provide offensively. I’m glad that I did! The manager’s idea, but he listens a lot. You can see the numbers.

“It’s quite tricky because when you play in the Premier League you also have to defend their left-back, but I spoke to him and told him I can gamble here and there, but when we get the ball I can make the difference. The number of assists shows that. It’s not just about goals, it’s about creating for the team."

TITLE-WINNING MERCH ANYONE? Gakpo has it all!

More from Andy Robertson:

“We had a bit of a scare but it was a fantastic performance. We’ve set really high standards. People say the league isn’t as good as it was but it’s nonsense. We’ve tried so hard to be so consistent and that’s why we’re so far ahead and win it with so many games to spare.

“We focus now on Crystal Palace to get our hands on the trophy. It was what [Slot] said in his first week, “we finished third last season, I want to finish first this one”, we all got right behind it.”
