An innovative idea that will educate the local community about healthy eating, nutrition and food cultivation as well as feed the Anfield faithful has been launched with the opening of an allotment run by Liverpool FC.
The 1,200 square metre plot, located near the club's Anfield home, will be used to grow and harvest seasonal produce including fruit, vegetables and honey; food that will be served as part of Liverpool's matchday menu for supporters.
The allotment will engage the community and schools, who will help tend to the crops throughout the year.
There is another tangible link with Liverpool's history at the allotment as items from the old main stand have been utilised for pathways, raised beds, planters and trellis.
Liverpool Ladies players Mollie Green and Danielle Gibbons opened the allotment and were impressed with the wider benefits of the scheme.
"Healthy eating is a massive part of being a professional footballer and to have food from places like this to boost the local community is even better," Green said.
