If Liverpool prove unsuccessful in claiming a first Premier League title, Paul Scholes says it will be because of their result at his former club Manchester United.
For Scholes, the goalless draw between Liverpool and an injury-hit Man Utd team at Old Trafford in February was crucial to the fact that they now lie one point behind Manchester City with just two rounds of fixtures remaining.
"When you look back, Liverpool's biggest mistake was not beating United at Old Trafford, when you see how many players United had missing," says Scholes.
"I think they got three injuries [in that match]. Jesse Lingard came on and pulled his hamstring.
"Liverpool were really poor that day. You saw the difference the other night when City came to Old Trafford and were dominant and looked a really top team.
"Liverpool could have lost it at Old Trafford."
