Claude Makelele gave Chelsea the lead with a brilliant, rare goal - a sweetly-struck volley - before Michael Dawson equalised for Spurs with a header.
Aaron Lennon's smart finish sealed the three points before John Terry was sent off for Jose Mourinho's side.
The result left Spurs in 10th with 15 points while Chelsea were second on 25 points, three behind leaders Manchester United.
2012: West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Southampton
Peter Odemwingie's double gave West Bromwich Albion victory at the Hawthorns and increased the pressure on bottom club Southampton.
Odemwingie struck the opener from outside the penalty area on 36 minutes.
Rickie Lambert struck the crossbar for Southampton soon after the break, before Odemwingie headed West Brom into a two-goal lead.
Victory lifted West Brom to fifth, on 17 points, while Southampton stayed 20th with four points, five points from safety.
