VAR: Goals

VAR screen checking goal

All goals scored in the Premier League are automatically checked by the VAR. They will check for any infringements by the attacking team in the attacking possession phase (APP) that led to the goal.

For factual decisions such as offside or the ball being out of play, the VAR will inform the referee, who will overturn the award of a goal on field.

For subjective decisions such as a foul or a handball, VAR should intervene if a “clear and obvious error” has been identified from the readily available evidence.

The referee will confirm their on-field decision to the VAR and what they have seen - the "Referee's Call".

If the evidence readily available to the VAR from the broadcast footage shows that the referee's on-field call is clearly and obviously wrong, the VAR can recommend the on-field referee goes to the pitchside monitor to review.

The final decision will remain with the on-field referee.
