Sunderland got the point they needed but may rue their failure to hang on to their lead after being held by Stoke City.
As it turned out, a victory would have taken them up to third in the final standings, giving them home advantage in a one-legged playoff semi-final against Crystal Palace.
Instead they will have to face Stoke again, this time away from home at the bet365 Stadium.
