Bruno Fernandes marked his first match as Manchester United captain with a goal in a 2-0 win over Arsenal in front of an American-record attendance of 82,262 in New York.

Fernandes smashed past Aaron Ramsdale from the edge of the box with his weaker left foot.

Jadon Sancho scored the other goal of the match, pouncing on an error from Gabriel and firing into the roof of the net.

Mason Mount again played in a deeper role in Man Utd's midfield, while Jurrien Timber made his first start for Arsenal. The only negative for United was Amad Diallo going off injured with an apparent ankle injury.

Man Utd also prevailed in a post-match penalty shootout, scoring all five of their spot-kicks, with Fabio Vieira missing for Arsenal.

It means United have won all three pre-season outings and are yet to concede, while also inflicting Arsenal's first defeat of the summer.

Young scores on Everton debut

Summer signing Ashley Young marked his first Everton appearance with the only goal as the Toffees made it back-to-back wins to start pre-season, beating Wigan Athletic.

Playing on the left of an attacking trio, Young smashed in from 12 yards in a match that also saw goalkeeper Jordan Pickford make his first outing since returning from an extended summer break.

New signing from AFC Bournemouth, Jefferson Lerma, made his first appearance, while goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made some impressive saves.

Eberechi Eze played 87 minutes but did not add to his one goal and three assists in pre-season so far.
