Bruno Guimaraes was Newcastle United’s hero as he scored two superb goals to give the Magpies a thrilling 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest and keep alive their hopes of European football next season.

The Brazilian struck a brilliant volley for the opener before curling in a wonderful shot in an entertaining match that saw Forest twice come from behind to level proceedings.

How the match unfolded

Nott'm Forest made one change from their 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth last Saturday, with Moussa Niakhate coming in for Andrew Omobamidele.

Newcastle also made one alteration as Callum Wilson was named in the starting XI in place of Jacob Murphy.

The visitors made a fast start at the City Ground as Guimaraes produced a superb sidefooted volley across goal after 10 minutes from Kieran Trippier’s deep cross.

It gave Trippier a 10th assist this season, level with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins in the race for the Castrol Playmaker award. The Newcastle right-back is also the first to reach double figures for assists in a season for Newcastle since Laurent Robert in 2001/02.

Forest were a threat on the counter-attack though, and Newcastle had their first warning when Anthony Elanga outpaced Dan Burn and saw his shot saved well by Martin Dubravka.

Moments later Forest equalised in a similar fashion. Again Elanga raced away from Burn before showing better composure to slide the ball past Dubravka this time into the bottom corner.

Newcastle regained their lead through Fabian Schar, who produced a fine sidefooted finish past new Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels for his third goal in his last two away matches.

But again Newcastle’s defence continued their recent vulnerability as Forest fought back again to level in first-half stoppage time.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, with the aid of a huge deflection off Lewis Miley, saw his shot go in to make it 2-2 in the sixth minute of added time for his third goal from outside of the box this season, a joint-league high.

Hudson-Odoi goal

Midway through the second half, Newcastle ensured they wouldn’t drop points for a second match in a row as Guimaraes struck again. This time the Brazilian showed his shooting boots from range, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the area on 66 minutes.

Forest applied pressure on Newcastle’s goal in an attempt to force a third equaliser, but were unable to test Dubravka seriously as they suffered a sixth home defeat in their last seven to remain in 16th and only two points above the relegation zone.

Successive away wins for Newcastle lift them to seventh on 36 points, two points behind Manchester United, who play Villa tomorrow.
