Manchester City made UEFA Champions League history as they booked their place in the quarter-finals after a 6-2 aggregate success over FC Copenhagen.

They have become the first English team to win 10 consecutive matches in the competition.

Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez put Man City 2-0 ahead with just 10 minutes played and despite Copenhagen pulling a goal back just before the half hour, Erling Haaland netted in first-half stoppage time to complete a 3-1 victory on the night at the Etihad Stadium.

City will find out their opponents for the quarter-finals when the draw is made on Friday 15 March.

How the match unfolded

Pep Guardiola made several changes to his starting XI, with only EdersonRuben Dias, Rodri and Haaland keeping their place in the side from the one victorious over Manchester United on Sunday.

Following their dominant 3-1 first-leg victory in Denmark, Man City took only five minutes to extend their advantage as Akanji fired in with a side-footed volley from an Alvarez corner.

City profited from a goalkeeping error less than five minutes later to double their lead, when Kamil Grabara allowed Alvarez's effort to slip through his hands and into the back of the net after Rodri's header had come back off the crossbar.

Copenhagen struck on 29 minutes thanks to a goal from former Southampton player Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The holders added a third just before the break, when a brilliant angled pass from Rodri found Haaland and he cut in onto his left foot and his strike was deflected in.

That took the Norwegian to six goals in this season's Champions League, making him the joint leading scorer along with Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane.

Haaland celebrated the moment by jokingly appearing to mimic his miss in the Manchester derby, when he somehow volleyed over the crossbar.
