Donohue began his refereeing journey as an assistant referee at the age of 14.
Following a rise through the pyramid, he gained promotion to the EFL assistant referees list in 2014, where he operated for two seasons in that capacity before deciding to focus his attention solely on refereeing.
The 35-year-old once again quickly made his way through the levels prior to returning to the EFL in 2018, this time in the middle. In his time on the list, Donohue has made just short of 200 appearances as a referee in the professional game.
He went on to oversee the National League playoffs in 2018, was fourth official for the FA Trophy Final in 2019 and took charge of an EFL League One playoff in 2022.
