Manchester United have confirmed that Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension until June 2026.

Reports earlier this summer suggested the 54-year-old Dutchman could be replaced at Old Trafford, but both he and the club have agreed to new terms for the next two years.

Ten Hag told the club's official website: “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.

"However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.

"In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”

Man Utd's new sporting director Dan Ashworth said: “With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

"While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes."

Ten Hag's impact at Man Utd

Ten Hag arrived from Ajax in the summer of 2022. In his first season Man Utd finished third and won the EFL Cup - their first major honour in six years.

However, last season proved to be a difficult campaign for Ten Hag.

The club suffered several injuries in 2023/24, with first-choice defenders Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez missing much of the season, contributing to United’s struggles.

United conceded 58 goals, their most in a Premier League season, and suffered nine home defeats across all competitions, their most in a single campaign since recording the same number of losses in 1973/74.

The Red Devils were also knocked out in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and an eighth-placed finish was their lowest in Premier League history.

However, the campaign ended on a positive note as United won the FA Cup, beating rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on 25 May, a result that also meant they qualified for the UEFA Europa League in 2024/25.

When are Man Utd back in action?

Ten Hag's next match in charge will be a friendly on Monday 15 July against Rosenborg in Norway, kicking off Man Utd's pre-season programme.

The Red Devils then kick off the new Premier League season on Friday 16 August at home to Fulham.
