Amad's late goal earns Man Utd draw in thriller at Liverpool

Manchester United became just the third team this season to avoid defeat away to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday - but their head coach and captain were left "mad" and "upset" after the 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Man Utd produced arguably their best performance of the season to halt a three-game losing run in the league against the team with a five-point lead in the title race heading into the match.

But despite Amad's late goal earning them a point, Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes were left disappointed. Both because they can't understand how Man Utd can play so well against Liverpool but so poorly in consecutive defeats to AFC Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United, three teams they conceded a combined seven goals against without scoring once in return.

"I get more mad because of the other games. It's even harder to understand some things," Amorim told Sky Sports.

"This is not about the system, it's about something else. It's hard to understand even for the coach. We should get mad and disappointed - more than the other day, against Newcastle, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest. Today we need to be really disappointed.

"[I haven't told my players this yet] because I need to calm down and say the right thing. We are in a difficult moment. It's hard to not get really mad. I'm happy for the performance and the result - but I'm really really mad about the other games."

On what he saw in the performance at Anfield that he wants his players to replicate in future matches, Amorim said: "You can ask any person. Fight, face the opponent, believe, go for the second balls. Fight. It's so clear."

To BBC Match of the Day, he added: "That should be a big issue for our players that even one person thinks you have the ability but not the character. We have to fight that and change that.

"I think it is really clear. When we are focused, when we fight for every ball, when we suffer and we are tired when the game is finished, we are a good team."

Amorim: Man Utd need a shock

Man Utd are 13th in the Premier League table and with only three wins in 12 matches in all competitions under Amorim since he succeeded Erik ten Hag as head coach in November.

In his post-match press conference, Amorim suggested nothing will change at Man Utd unless the club are given a shock.

"I am trying to make them [the players] improve every day. I always challenge them. I feel like everybody, not just the players, but everyone at Man Utd, is too comfortable. I think we need a shock. You can see we were a different team today. It's not about the system, it's about the way we face the competition."

Fernandes: Why can't we always play like this?

Like his head coach, Man Utd captain Fernandes was left with as many questions as answers after Sunday's result, revealing he is angry at the club's poor form and inconsistency.

"We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points," Fernandes told Sky Sports.

"Even today we can't be happy with a point. We need the points and we could've won the game at the end, but it's a fair result. Both teams played good football.

"I'm pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can't we do this everywhere? It frustrates me. Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season.

"We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that's why we took something from today.

"It can't stop here, We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it an Anfield, we have to do it everywhere."

Man Utd's next PL fixtures

When told about Fernandes' comments, Amorim said: "I think that is a good sign. It's really clear. We lost three games in a row at home. Some of them, we conceded two without trying. So, I am upset. I am pleased for the performance. Everyone is going to say they [the players] performed well. Today I am allowed to be the only guy upset. But today, we were a team."

Scholes: I understand Amorim's 'mad' comments

Paul Scholes won 11 Premier League titles with Man Utd, and the former midfielder understands Amorim's comments.

"He's [Amorim] equally pleased as he is disappointed. Even me, sat here, it was really good, but I can't get excited about it because I don't know what's going to come next! I have no idea about the next five or six games. You can't predict this team. He's right - he can't coach effort. He can put them into positions etc, but he can't give them the fire in their belly."

'Best performance in a long time' - What did the pundits think?

Scholes: "It was a great game to watch. That's the best Man Utd have played for a long, long time. Including the performance at Man City, where they won. They were better today. They're up against the best team in the league - probably the best team in Europe. They've gone toe-to-toe with them. You expect them to sit in, defend for long periods of the game, but they had as many chances as Liverpool. [Manuel] Ugarte was brilliant. Fernandes was really good. Amad was a threat again. If they'd have won the game, you couldn't have argued about it."

Michael Owen, 11th-highest scorer in Premier League history: "I thought Man Utd were very brave on the ball. Not that Man Utd were the best team - it was quite a 50:50 game. But for an away performance at Anfield, against a team in such good form, that was as good a Man Utd performance as I've seen in a long time."

Roy Keane, seven-time Premier League champion, to Sky Sports: "Manchester United turned up. They showed a bit of passion. They did it at Manchester City recently as well. The argument to all of this though is that you can't just pick and choose when you want to turn up for a game at Manchester United. I don't think anyone would have predicted them scoring two goals today or nearly nicking it at the end. But the key is that they have to back it up."

Gary Neville, eight-time title-winner with Man Utd, to Sky Sports: "It was a massive change. It was the best performance under Ruben Amorim if not all season, by a mile, to come to Anfield, the best team in the league all year. It surpasses the victory at City. They're in a bad moment, and they were fortunate to get that victory. But today they were magnificent, they fully deserved their victory - sorry, it felt like one. There's no Man Utd fan who woke up and wasn't expecting the worst. Mainoo, Ugarte and Fernandes controlled midfield against Gravenberch, Jones and Mac Allister, who have been outstanding all season."
