There have been some iconic transfers in the Premier League, and Sky Sports host Kelly Cates and a panel of experts have discussed some of the best.
The second Transfer Watch Live event took place earlier this month on Wednesday 5 February, following a successful event in 2024. As the official banking partner of the Premier League, Barclays are the presenting partner of Transfer Watch.
Kelly was joined by industry experts including former Premier League strikers Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe, journalist David Ornstein and Brighton & Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber.
The panel discussed the ins and outs of the January 2025 transfer window, touching on how clubs use data to inform their football transfer strategies, and also sharing their iconic "Barclaysmen" transfers.
Bent recalls his move from Spurs to Sunderland in August 2009, saying: "I was sitting on the plane on a runway at Heathrow Airport knowing that I was going to leave Tottenham. [I was] asked me to get off the plane before it had taken off!
"JD [Jermain Defoe] was there laughing his head off!"
Defoe says: "I remember phoning Joe Cole and saying, 'Coley, are you going to come to Tottenham?' And he said, 'Yeah I fancy it, just waiting, my agent's talking.'
"On Sky Sports News he'd [just] signed for Liverpool!"
