Step forward the Ferguson blueprint: heroes across the pitch; a never say die attitude; a last-gasp snatching of victory. United found their winning formula – their ‘mental attitude’, as Ferguson put it. And they never looked back.

The rest, as they say, is written in history. A staggering 13 league titles established them as a modern day behemoth.
