In a frantic opening Alvaro Negredo started and finished a breakway move for the visitors, sliding in at the back post to score from a tight angle on five minutes.
Lazar Markovic capitalised on some hesitant Middlesbrough defending to equalise from close range. On the half-hour, Oumar Niasse sent a snapshot past Victor Valdes from the edge of the area.
Abel Hernandez extended Hull's lead from Kamil Grosicki's pull-back but Marten de Roon’s header reduced the deficit.
Harry Maguire’s second-half header completed victory, sending Marco Silva’s side seven points clear of 19th-placed Middlesbrough and out of the relegation zone.
