James McArthur almost put the hosts ahead a minute into the match, but his header went narrowly over.
Palace came even closer on 37 minutes when Luka Milivojevic's free-kick beat everyone in the penalty area but came back off a post.
Sakho's chance came on 82 minutes when he somehow headed wide of an open goal from inside the six-yard box.
The result moves Palace to 11th on seven points, while Newcastle earn only their second point of the season to go 18th.
