In-form Newcastle United earned a fourth win in five Premier League matches as eased past Crystal Palace 4-0 at St James’ Park.
The home team got off to a dream start as Jacob Murphy opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Kieran Trippier’s sumptuous cushioned pass set up Murphy down the right channel to send a brilliant lob over Sam Johnstone and into the far corner.
Anthony Gordon, back from suspension, missed a glorious chance to double the lead but could only hit the bar from close range. He made amends just before half-time, converting first-time Murphy’s brilliant cross at the far post.
There was still time for a third Newcastle goal before the break, Sean Longstaff profiting from a slip by Marc Guehi to advance into the area and score.
Murphy was also involved in the fourth with his cross-pass finding Callum Wilson to finish midway through the second half.
The win lifts Newcastle to fifth, with 16 points.
Palace are 11th with 12 points.
