Newcastle United progressed to the Division 1 playoff final thanks to a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Reading.

The visiting Magpies fell behind at the Madejski Stadium to Teddy Howe's goal on the hour but Tom Allan teed up Callum Roberts to equalise.

The match went to extra time and Reading thought they had won it when Jordan Holsgrove scored from long range.

But Newcastle were awarded a penalty in added time and Kelland Watts kept his cool to convert.

Buoyed by that late goal, Newcastle triumphed in the shootout as goalkeeper Nathan Harker saved three times to allow Jamie Sterry (pictured) to strike the winning spot-kick.

Newcastle will face Southampton in the final after they beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the other semi-final on Friday night.

The match will be played at St Mary's Stadium due to Saints finishing higher in the regular season.
