The impact and popularity of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) in Fantasy Premier League has been declining during a run of five blanks in the last six Gameweeks.

But FPL expert Az Phillips believes now is the time to back the Manchester United forward, as he prepares to visit Watford.

“I will most likely be bringing in Ronaldo and captaining him,” says Az in the video below on the latest FPL Show.

“It’s purely based on the fixture. Watford are the second-worst defensive side, other than Man Utd, over the last four. I just think Ronaldo could get three or four goals in that game.”

With Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) facing a tricky fixture against Arsenal, a number of FPL managers may look elsewhere with the armband.

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo (£6.5m) is even a candidate, as the second highest-scoring player in Fantasy behind Salah.

Gianni Buttice, Az’s fellow FPL expert, says: “He’s not really a defender, is he? Cancelo this season drifts into that No 10 channel and gets lots of shots off. We like it.”

Az adds: “I can’t see Everton scoring but then I saw City beaten by Crystal Palace quite comfortably a few weeks ago. That’s the problem with captaining a defender. It can turn around so quickly.

“If Everton do come out on the front foot and City do have to defend a bit more, and he’s not getting forward as we’ve seen, then you’re going to wish you’d put it on Salah.”

In the video above, Az also has a word of caution for those planning to give the armband to Harry Kane (£12.2m) against Leeds United, while Gianni reveals his captain choice.
