Caceres, who will wear the number 12 shirt, has 68 caps for Uruguay and has also played at Barcelona and Sevilla. He strengthens a Southampton defence recently hit by an ankle injury to Virgil van Dijk .
"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he [Caceres] will bring experience, talent and character,” Les Reed, the Southampton executive director of football, told southamptonfc.com. “He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.”

After the EFL Cup final on 26 February, Southampton are next in Premier League action on 4 March, when they travel to Watford.
Caceres joins after Manolo Gabbiadini and Mouez Hassen were signed by Southampton in the January transfer window.
