It was Spurs’ first victory over United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but the visitors would have rued a number of missed chances.
Marcus Rashford had a good chance to give Man Utd the lead after he found space in Spurs’ penalty area before being thwarted by Guglielmo Vicario.
The goalscoring opportunities didn’t stop there for the visitors though, as Bruno Fernandes spurned a great chance when he headed over Luke Shaw’s cross from six yards out.
Man Utd were fortunate not to trail at the break though, as Spurs struck the woodwork twice in a matter of seconds. Pedro Porro first hit the crossbar from edge of the area before, moments later, Shaw nearly diverted the ball into his own net.
After neither team could find the net from 21 combined shots in the first half, Pape Matar Sarr struck within five minutes of the restart when he fired in from close range after a cross from Dejan Kulusevski had fallen to him.
Man Utd continued to create chances and Vicario produced a good reflex save to deny a Casemiro header from Fernandes’s set-piece.
The visitors’ misery was compounded seven minutes from time when Ben Davies got the slightest of touches on an Ivan Perisic pass before Lisandro Martinez then deflected the ball into his own net.
The defeat continues United's poor run of results against the traditional “big six”, having failed to beat any of them since Erik ten Hag took charge.
