Andre Onana will be recalled for Manchester United's UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon, Ruben Amorim has confirmed.

The Cameroon international goalkeeper was left out of Man Utd's squad for their 4-1 defeat at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, following his errors in the first leg in Lyon days before.

Amorim has announced Onana will play at Old Trafford on Thursday night, replacing Altay Bayindir in goal. He said: "As a coach and former player, first of all I try to do things that can help a player in this situation.

"We speak about managing players physically but we also have to manage them mentally.

"We had one weekend where I felt it was better for Andre Onana not to play and a good thing for Altay [Bayindir] to play. He [Onana] will play tomorrow.

"When I made that decision I talked with Andre and that is important for me to explain to the player to understand what I am thinking. Sometimes the player is saying one thing and I understand it's a different thing.

"They want to show they are really confident and I can feel the other way. So I have the conversation but it is my decision in the end."

Amorim’s team were denied a win in Lyon when Rayan Cherki tapped in the rebound after Onana’s handling mistake.

It levelled the tie at 2-2 after substitute Joshua Zirkzee headed home Bruno Fernandes' cross in the 88th minute.

But Amorim won’t be able to call upon striker Zirkzee this time; the striker will miss the rest of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in the Newcastle match.

"He is out for the season," Amorim said in his press conference. "He will not play again this season, let's prepare him for the next one.

"It is tough, he was improving in every aspect of the game. It is tough for any player but he has to be ready to recover."

The head coach spoke about the financial importance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League by winning the Europa League, but said there were positives to be found from the possibility of no European football next season.

Amorim said: "I think it is more about the budget. That is important when you are planning for the next season, the Champions League can change everything.

"But you can see it both ways. [If you are in the] Champions League it is tough to play against top teams on Wednesday and then at the weekend in the Premier League.

"If we don't have the Champions League, we have more time to build the team."
