Sterling, who had an earlier effort well saved by Thomas Kaminski, put Chelsea ahead in the 17th minute with a moment of magic.
Making a weaving run, which started out wide, Sterling beat three Luton players before finding the bottom corner with a left-footed shot.
Chelsea controlled long periods of the contest, with Moises Caicedo, making his first start for Chelsea, looking assured in central midfield.
Indeed, it was his pass out wide that found Malo Gusto, and the right-back's low cross was clinically converted by Sterling to make it 2-0 in the 68th minute.
Sterling has been directly involved in 18 goals in his last 17 Premier League appearances against promoted teams, with 14 goals and four assists.
He then turned provider seven minutes later when his brilliant first-time cross took a slight deflection before being swept in by Jackson for his first Premier League goal.
