Newcastle United have been dealt another blow with the news that Dan Burn is expected to miss “a couple of months” due to a back injury.

The defender landed awkwardly during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday and was taken off as a result at half-time.

"Dan will be out for some time I think, a long-term problem, couple of months is sort of a speculative number for us,” said head coach Eddie Howe.

"He landed on his spine. I think he has got a problem with the base of his spine. It's a huge blow.

"He's been gigantic for us since he signed, for lots of different reasons as I have continually said. His character, his determination to win, his experience and his versatility as well.

"It's not just one position we are losing, we are losing his ability to play centre-back as well. But it is something we have to roll with."

Burn has been ever-present for Newcastle this season, starting all 11 of their Premier League matches.

He is now set for a period on the sidelines starting with Tuesday's UEFA Champions League trip to Borussia Dortmund.

Burn joins a growing injury list for Howe's side which includes Jacob Murphy, who appeared as a second-half substitute against Arsenal, but was forced off with a dislocated shoulder.

Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson are among the notable absentees.

Newcastle's next Premier League match is at AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.
