Arsenal stayed two points behind leaders Liverpool after another rampant display, triumphing 5-0 at Burnley on the back of last weekend’s 6-0 victory at West Ham United.

Having watched Liverpool triumph 4-1 at Brentford in Saturday’s early match, the Gunners responded with an even more emphatic win, scoring at least five goals in back-to-back away matches for the first time ever.

Martin Odegaard gave the visitors an early lead and Bukayo Saka then struck twice either side of half-time, before Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz completed the rout.

The Gunners maintain their perfect start to 2024 after five straight wins and now have a better goal difference than Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

How the match unfolded

Both managers named unchanged line-ups, on a day when Burnley boss Vincent Kompany served a touchline ban.

Arsenal continued their habit of scoring early goals, taking the lead on four minutes. Gabriel Martinelli pulled the ball back to the edge of the box, where Odegaard lashed a half-volley into the bottom corner for his fifth goal this season.

Odegaard goal

In the 39th minute Trossard was brought down in the box by Lorenz Assignon for a penalty, and Saka converted his spot-kick for the second match in a row.

There was no let-up after the break as Saka struck again in the 47th minute, running onto Odegaard’s through-ball and smashing the ball into the roof of the net inside the near post, making it four goals in three Premier League matches and 12 this season.

Burnley’s misfortune continued as Aaron Ramsey was stretched off, being replaced by Jay Rodriguez. And on 66 minutes Trossard piled on further misery, curling the ball past James Trafford inside the box.

Havertz wrapped up the scoring with a superb solo goal in the 78th minute. Taking Jakub Kiwior’s long throw in his stride, the German surged into the box and nutmegged Hannes Delcroix before slotting the ball past Trafford, ending a seven-match goal drought.

Burnley have now gone seven matches without a win, leaving them in 19th on 13 points, seven points from safety.

Next five Premier League fixtures
Key facts

Arsenal have begun a calendar year with five successive league victories for the first time in the club’s history. This is now their longest winning run in the Premier League this season, improving their goal difference by +19 during this period.

Arsenal have scored 5+ goals in back-to-back away league matches for the first time in the club’s history. The Gunners are the first top-flight side to score 5+ goals in consecutive away games since Liverpool in October 2021 (vs Watford & Man Utd – both 5-0).

Burnley have won just one of their 13 home Premier League games this term (D2 L10), with that win coming against fellow newly promoted side Sheffield United in December.

Since the start of last season, only five players have been involved in more Premier League goals than Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard (33 - 20 goals, 13 assists), while he's had a hand in more goals than any other midfielder in the competition during this period.
