West Ham United have signed World Cup-winning defensive midfielder Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old Argentinian arrives at London Stadium having spent the last four-and-a-half seasons at LaLiga side Real Betis, and becomes West Ham's sixth summer addition.

What did he have to say?

“I feel like it’s every footballer’s dream to play in the Premier League, and I was very excited when I heard that West Ham were interested in me,” Rodriguez told the official club website.

Rodriguez is reunited with his former Club America team-mate Edson Alvarez in West Ham's midfield, and added: “I spoke to Edson before signing, and we’re both really looking forward to working together again.”

Who is Guido Rodriguez?

Rodriguez, born in Buenos Aires on 12 April 1994, started his professional career with River Plate in 2014. He later moved to Mexican side Club Tijuana in 2016, and then to Club America in 2017.

Rodriguez's international career with Argentina began in 2017, and he has since earned 30 caps. He was a member of the 2021 and 2024 Copa America-winning squads, as well as the FIFA World Cup 2022-winning side.

He made over 170 appearances during his time with Real Betis, and won the Copa Del Rey in 2021/22.

West Ham’s 2024/25 transfer activity

Rodriguez joins striker Niclas Fullkrug, wingers Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme, goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and defender Maximilian Kilman as summer arrivals at West Ham.

Meanwhile, defenders Angelo Ogbonna, Ben Johnson and Thilo Kehrer, along with midfielders Said Benrahma and Flynn Downes, have all left the club.
