Manchester United have completed the double signing of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.

The defenders, who worked with Erik ten Hag while at Ajax, have signed contracts until June 2029 and June 2028 respectively, both with the option to extend for a further year.

They become Man Utd's third and fourth additions of the summer transfer window.

What did they have to say?

"As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity for a new challenge at such an historic club," De Ligt told the official club website. "In the conversations that followed, I was impressed by the vision that the football leadership set out, and the role they saw for me in it."

Mazraoui added: "Erik ten Hag played an important part in my development as a player, so it is exciting to be reuniting with him as I enter the prime years of my career. I know what he expects from his players, and I will give everything to help the group be successful."

Who are Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui?

Born on 12 August 1999 in Leiderdorp, Netherlands, De Ligt began his career at FC Abcoude before he joined Ajax’s youth side at the age of 10. He made his debut for the club at the age of 17 in September 2016.

The centre-back became a key figure in Ajax’s defence, captaining them in the UEFA Europa League final against Man Utd, and becoming the youngest player to play in a UEFA club final at the age of 17 years and 285 days. Shortly after, he won the "Golden Boy" award.

The following season De Ligt captained Ajax to a domestic double, also reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

His performances won him a move to Juventus, where he won the league and cup, but after two seasons he switched to Bayern, winning the Bundesliga.

De Ligt has earned 45 caps for the Netherlands.

Mazraoui was born also in Leiderdorp, on 14 November 1997, and started playing football for local club AVV Alpen aged four. He moved to Alphense Boys three years later before joining the Ajax academy, progressing through the ranks and making his Eredivisie debut in February 2018.

He went on to make 93 senior appearances between 2018-2022 and scored six goals. His form attracted Bayern Munich, and Mazraoui signed a four-year deal with the Bundesliga side in May 2022.

Mazraoui has been capped by Morocco 28 times, scoring twice.

What has been Man Utd's transfer activity this summer?

The pair become the third and fourth summer signings for Man Utd, who have also acquired Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, as well as Lille defender Leny Yoro.

When could they make their debuts?

Man Utd open the 2024/25 Premier League season on Friday 16 August at home to Fulham. The pair's arrival will boost Ten Hag's defensive options for the match after Yoro, and today Luke Shaw, suffered injuries in pre-season that will force them out of United's opening fixtures.
