Southampton have signed Portugal Under-21 international midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Sporting CP on a five-year deal.

The 20-year-old joined Sporting's youth system from his local club Olhanense in 2016, and progressed through the ranks, playing regularly for the B team.

He spent last season on loan at Estoril, making 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga and helping the club reach their first cup final in 80 years.

“It’s a dream come true to come to England and play in the Premier League," Fernandes told Southampton's official website.

"It’s the best league in the world, in my opinion. It has the best coaches, the best players, the best teams. It’s good for me, for my growth and I’m happy.

“I know some things about Southampton. I know about the city. I know Jose Fonte played here, Cedric [Soares], so I want to talk to them. I spoke to the manager and I like him a lot - his energy, his feeling, he’s very good."

Southampton manager Russell Martin added: “Mateus is a player we have been monitoring for a while and someone we are really excited about. He brings great energy, retains possession well and always looks for the forward pass.

“He is young and full of enthusiasm to come and play for Southampton. With the ability he has to drive forward from midfield, we think he has some key attributes to really help us - not just in the future, given his age, but here and now in the Premier League.”

Rutter agrees five-year deal with Brighton

Brighton & Hove Albion have signed French striker Georginio Rutter from Leeds United on a five-year contract until June 2029, subject to a work permit.

The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks with Stade Rennais before joining Hoffenheim in February 2021, making 64 appearances and scoring 11 goals.

Rutter became Leeds' record signing in January 2023 and was a key figure for Daniel Farke’s side last season, making 51 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and adding 16 assists.

Brighton's head coach Fabian Hurzeler told the club's official website: “Georginio is a player who has the capabilities to get fans off their seats and really showed what he can do in English football with Leeds last season - but I have known about him since he played in Germany for Hoffenheim. Now we have to integrate him into the team."

Technical director David Weir added: “Georginio is a player we have been looking at for a while. He's a strong technical player and one we are excited to bring to the club. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop with us.”

Ipswich bring in Cajuste on loan

Ipswich Town have signed Sweden international midfielder Jens Cajuste from Napoli on a season-long loan.

The 25-year-old midfielder won two Danish cups and a Danish Superliga title across four years with FC Midtjylland, before having a season on loan with Reims in France and then joining Napoli last summer, making 26 Serie A appearances last campaign.

Cajuste has European experience after playing in the UEFA Champions League for Midtjylland and Napoli, and he has 23 caps for Sweden.

“[Ipswich is] an ambitious club and a team that is progressing," Cajuste told the official club website. “I’m a player that works hard and I want to contribute in attack and defence. I want to play as much as possible and I’ll be looking to get some good tackles in!"

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna added: “He gives us another different profile to our midfield and puts us in a strong position in that department.

“Jens has a lot of experience across top leagues in Europe and in international football. He brings good physical and technical qualities to the squad and he is a very dedicated and committed professional.”

Skipp joins Leicester from Spurs

Oliver Skipp has signed for Leicester City from Tottenham Hotspur, becoming the club's sixth addition of the summer.

The 23-year-old midfielder has agreed to a five-year contract.

Skipp links up with another former Spurs academy graduate, Harry Winks, at the King Power Stadium.

What did he have to say?

“I had conversations with the people here and they gave me a feeling of warmth and that they were excited to have me on board. As a player, when you feel that excitement, that’s something you can use to develop your game,” Skipp said on Leicester's official website.

“The staff here know me as well - Steve [Cooper], I have worked with at England so there’s definitely a good relationship there and I’m keen to push on and show what I can do.”

Who is Oliver Skipp?

Born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England on 16 September 2000, Skipp joined Spurs' Development Centre as a five-year-old.

He progressed through the ranks and made his senior debut in a 3-1 Carabao Cup win at West Ham United in October 2018. Skipp followed up with his Premier League debut as a second-half substitute in Spurs' 3-1 win over Southampton at Wembley Stadium in December 2018. By the end of his breakthrough campaign, he had made eight top-flight appearances.

Indeed, Skipp featured in seven different competitions across four age groups in 2018/19, including the first ever football fixture to be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an Under-18s match against Southampton in March 2019.

Skipp spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Norwich City and started 45 of 46 league matches as the Canaries won the Championship title and promotion back to the Premier League.

To date, the midfielder has made 77 Premier League appearances, scoring one goal. Skipp has represented England from Under-16 to Under-21 levels, featuring in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals in 2021 and 2023.

What type of player is he?

Described by Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou as a player who "never stops the intensity of his play with or without the ball," Skipp is a defensive midfielder - although he has on occasion played at left-back - adept at breaking up play and winning possession.

Leicester's summer transfer activity

Skipp is Leicester's sixth transfer of the summer window. He joins Abdul Fatawu, Caleb Okoli, Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Michael Golding, who have signed on a permanent basis, while Facundo Buonanotte has joined on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Leicester have sold or released five players so far, including Marc Albrighton, Kelechi Iheanacho and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

When could he make his debut?

With the signing still awaiting Premier League approval, Skipp's move does not come in time for him to play when Leicester face Spurs on Monday evening. Instead he could make his debut when Leicester travel to Fulham on Saturday 24 August.
